NOID Mini Phalaenopsis

While I'm waiting on some buds to bloom, I was going through pictures from this year and found some of this mini Phal that bloomed over the winter. For those of you that liked my husband's "dramatic," pictures of my plants, I came across these and figured I might as well put them up.

I like the very round shape and light purple-pink color of the flowers is interesting too, I thought the phal breeding trend was bolder brighter colors so I was expecting something different when it bloomed the 1st time 2 winters ago for me. I rescued this one from a Lowe's, out of bloom for $2. Mostly because the leaves are spotted and green/purple on top and red/purple on the undersides in high light. These pics while it was blooming we're taken during the winter when there's much less light here, so unfortunately you can't see it in the bloom pictures.

Here's a picture below I took today where you can see the spotting. If you aren't familiar with the terminology, "NOID" is short for "no identification." However, I'd put money on Phalaenopsis schilleriana being one of the parent plants of this hybrid.

Spotty leaves with increased light levels

  1. Beautiful flowers, I have 2 similar type Orchids (pink/white and purple), they flowered for over 6 months! Now that they are done, I need to keep them going, got new leaves and seems happy, I have them in high light/no direct sunlight area. LT

    1. Thanks! Phalaenopsis are good for blooms, once they open they say for a long time. Good that you have them in high but not direct light, too many people follow the care sheets that recommend less and wonder why they never bloom. I find that light is equally important as a temperature drop for reblooming these.

    1. Thanks, I'm not a fan of the usual pink phals either, I was almost disappointed at first when I saw what color this one bloomed. I changed my mind though, when they didn't color up any more than this.

Stalking in the shadows is fine too, lol, according to the stats on this blog I've got a ton more of those than official followers. Glad I could show people that cacti are more interesting than they think, you just gotta treat them right to be rewarded!

  3. Great looking Phal. Love how you rescue some of your plants, and bring them to very good health, even if the flowers are a bit of a surprise. I personally find these flowers very beautiful, very showy yet delicate. Great pics too!

    1. Thanks! As much as I'd like to buy only top quality plants, my current financial situation doesn't allow for that, lol. Plus there is a much more significant reward in blooming something you got when didn't look so hot/possibly might not make it.
